What Happened
Omegle was created by 18-year-old Leif K-Brooks in 2009. The premise was thrilling in its simplicity — click a button, get connected to a random stranger anywhere in the world. Text or video. No accounts, no profiles, no rules.
At its best, Omegle was magical. People made friends across continents, practiced foreign languages, and had genuinely wholesome moments. YouTubers turned Omegle reactions into a content genre that pulled millions of views.
But the anonymity that made Omegle exciting also made it dangerous. The platform became plagued with explicit content, predatory behavior, and serious child safety concerns. Lawsuits piled up, including a landmark case where Omegle was held liable for pairing a child with a sexual predator.
On November 8, 2023, after 14 years, Leif K-Brooks posted a lengthy farewell letter and shut Omegle down for good. He cited the relentless stress of fighting misuse, the financial burden of moderation, and the emotional toll of running a platform constantly under attack.
